The Honorverse (of David Weber)
Illustrated Character List.

Sorry, I just managed to "break" almost all my links to the images (11/29/05).
I'll try to fix the problem later this week or next.

GENERAL NOTE 1:
In the event that I should ever create other Honor Harrington related web pages, the Web Ring link [is/will] intentionally not be set to this page. The actual link is at this URL: "http://www.pihl.us/leif/honorverse/index.htm".

GENERAL NOTE 2:
As of late November, 2005, this page uploads at 1,252,203 bytes of text and html formatting (not including images). At some unknown time in the future I do intent to split it up into smaller chunks. My challenge is first, to figure out the best way to do so, and second, how to do so in a way that still makes printouts (partial or complete) a practical matter.

COPYRIGHT NOTICES:

I like each half of the "Honor Harrington Concordance", as linked to from URL: "http://hornpipermark.00freehost.com/", and recommend you check it out. ['honor_h' Web Ring member.] The text portion of the below list was derived from the Concordance.
Thank You
to Mark Gutis (hornpipermark@hotmail.com) for providing the information.

Why create this list? My own human limitations; and the expectation that I am not alone. I am the sort of a person who has a hard time keeping track of all the characters in a big story such as those in David Weber's "Honorverse". I could really use some sort of a visual clue or 'cheat-sheet' to help me remember who this or that character is.

Note that since this list in not intended as a movie cast list, images of the same person at different points in his/her life can be used for different persons, or even relatives in the same family. (i.e.: Early James Bond's Sean Connery versus the "Hunt for Red October" movie Sean Connery can be two different people.)

Here are some of the sources I have used so far:

If you have:

-a text file that shows the previous results of the HHMCVS, or

-ANY NOMINATION, suggestion, comment, and such, please send me an e-mail in care of:

b e c k y at p i h l dot u s.

Also, please note that anytime you see this placeholder image:
it means that I am especially interested in nominations/suggestions for that particular character.

Future Plans:
I arbitrarily decided that a printout of any sub page should not be more than eight pages.
As a result, this page is going to be split up into (at least) 41 separate sub-pages, or a multiple there of.

Adcock.
RMN Vice Admiral of the Green, the head of the Weapons Development Board, [IEH]; and Fourth Space Lord. [AOV] He is a native of Maslow and migrated to Manticore too late for prolong treatment. He graduated eighth in his academy class. At the age of one hundred fourteen, he is too old for a space-going command but his mind is still first-class. He often asks line officers for opinions on proposed weapons systems, without the knowledge of other WDB members. [IEH, Ch. 12] He sold Admiral Danvers on the idea of building HMS Minotaur to test the CLAC concept. [EOH]

Notes:
"...Vice Admiral of the Green Jonas Adcock, the Bureau of Weapons' commanding officer, was one of the RMN's characters. He was also one of the Navy's very few senior officers who had never received prolong, for he and his family had immigrated to the Star Kingdom from Maslow, a planet as technically backward as Pre-Alliance Grayson. Adcock had been too old to accept prolong when he arrived, but there hadn't been anything wrong with his brain. He'd graduated eighth in his Academy class, despite not having encountered a modern educational system until he was nineteen T-years old, and his career had been distinguished. Now, at an age of just over a hundred and fourteen, he was far too physically frail ever to hold a spacegoing command again, but there was still nothing wrong with his brain. He'd taken over BuWeaps eleven years before, just in time for the war, and he'd been an aggressive dynamo ever since. Indeed, he was probably the largest single reason that rationalized versions of the jeune école's proposals were beginning to come off the drawing boards as useable hardware.
Honor had enjoyed several far-ranging discussions with him while she'd been assigned to the Weapons Development Board, and she'd been impressed by his ability to think outside the boxes. She also liked and respected him, and, looking back with the advantage of what McKeon had just said, she realized he'd picked her brain on current operational problems even more thoroughly than she'd realized at the time. But he'd never suggested that he maintained an unofficial network of evaluators...." [IEH, Ch. 12]

As Crown Princess, she was adopted by a treecat named Seeker of Dreams on a state visit to Sphinx. He and several other treecats foiled an attempt to assassinate her. After that, her father’s attitude changed and they enjoyed a much closer relationship. [WOHw] She names Seeker of Dreams Dianchect. [OBS] She remains one of Manticore’s leading producer/directors and a leading poet. [IEH] Before her accident she rode horses, played tennis and grav skied. Although it was never discussed, she knew about his liaison with Theodosia Kuzak. His other brief affairs hurt her, not for the betrayal, but for what had been taken from them. She has seventy-five percent use of one hand but that is her only motion below the neck. [EOH] She realizes that her husband and Honor Harrington love each other but do not act on it for fear of hurting her. When the High Ridge government begins the rumor campaign that they actually are lovers, she helps defuse it by publicly acknowledging Harrington as a dear friend. After Harrington’s return from Sidemore Station, she explains that she and Samantha have been having extensive discussions about how silly humans act. She gives her blessings to them acting on their love for each other. [WOH]

--

Alexander, Hamish
—Earl White Haven; Admiral, Royal Manticoran Navy (ret.). First Lord of Admiralty, Star Kingdom of Manticore. [SOS]
--

Alexander, Lord Hamish, 13th Earl of White Haven, Admiral White Haven.
RMN Admiral of the Green, brother of Lord William Alexander and husband of Lady Emily Alexander. [OBS] He and Admiral Kuzak have been friends since childhood. Shortly after his wife’s accident, he and Kuzak had a brief affair because she sensed he needed the strength and support. [FOD] He translated Gustav Anderman’s Sternkrieg. From his flagship HMS Reliant, he leads the task force from Manticore that comes to the assistance of Grayson and prevents the loss of HMS Fearless (CA-286). [HOTQ] He shifts his flag to HMS Sphinx. [SVW] He is named President of Captain Lord Pavel Young’s court martial. He commands Task Force 4, part of the Home Fleet. His flagship is HMS Queen Caitrin. At the time, only nine RMN active duty officers are senior to him. He makes orders Honor Harrington not to challenge Earl North Haven to a duel. After she defies him and kills North Haven, he regrets having given an illegal order and one he knew would be ignored even if legal. [FOD] He leads the primary offensive against the PN, being finally checked in the Nightingale System. [FIE] He continues his drive on Trevor’s Star and considers making a direct attack despite his reputation as a master of the indirect approach. He also manages to incorporate certain ideas of the jeune ecole despite his distaste for it. [HAE] He is given command of Eighth Fleet, to be activated in the Yeltsin’s Star System with GNS Benjamin the Great as his flagship. At the time, he is ninety-three T-years old. He is deeply respected by the Graysons as the victor of the Third Battle of Yeltsin and the conqueror of Masada. At one time he served as Third Space Lord. While being chastised by Honor Harrington for narrow thinking, he has a brief realization of how attracted he is to her, an emotion that comes through to her through her link with Nimitz. As a result, when she is captured, he feels guilty that he may have driven her off Grayson. [IEH] By the time of her funeral, he is sure he is the reason. When word of the attack on the Basilisk System is received, he orders Eighth Fleet to re-deploy from Trevor’s Star to Basilisk via the Manticore Wormhole Junction. He arrives just in time to prevent further damage and to inflict severe casualties on the attackers. [EOH] When Harrington returns to Trevor’s Star, he is glad she is wearing the uniform of a Grayson admiral so he can greet her as an equal. [AOV] Because of the mutual hatred between him and Sir Edward Janacek, he is placed on half-pay. He and Harrington realize they love each other but do nothing about it because of their mutual respect for Lady Emily. The High Ridge government, in an attempt to neutralize their influence, starts a rumor campaign that they are lovers. This is somewhat complicated by the fact that Samantha adopts him. Acting on intelligence that she sends him directly, he travels to Grayson to arrange for the GSN to reinforce Trevor’s Star. Using the Manticoran Wormhole Junction on an emergency priority basis, they arrive just in time to discourage Admiral Giscard from pressing his attack. Following the fall of the High Ridge government, he is made First Lord of the Admiralty. Lady Emily, after extensive discussions with Samantha, gives her blessings to him and Harrington acting on their love for each other. [WOH]

Description of Appearance:
"...tall, dark-haired... ...rugged face... "
"Hamish Alexander was forty-seven—just over eighty standard years old—himself, though he looked less than a third his father's age, but there were fresh worry lines around his eyes and a few new strands of white at his temples." [OBS, Ch. 12]
"...a broad-shouldered man a centimeter taller than Honor..." [FOD, Epilogue]
"...The earl was ninety T-years old, though in a pre-prolong society he would have been taken for no more than a very well preserved forty, and even that would have been only because of the white stranded through his black hair. But there were new lines around his ice-blue eyes..." [HAE, Ch. 1]

Description/Note:
"...Whatever his own life expectancy, he'd grown up in a society where people still died after little more than a T-century, and at the deepest levels, the assumptions of that earlier society remained a part of his mental baggage. At ninety-two, anyone as young as Honor Harrington still seemed a child to him, and the fact that her own third-generation treatments froze the aging process at a far earlier point only made it worse. He at least had streaks of white in his hair and what he preferred to think of as "character lines" around his eyes, whereas she looked like a pre-prolong nineteen or twenty!..." [IEH, Ch. 1]

RMN captain, captain of HMS War Maiden. He is wounded during the engagement against PSN Annika. [COWm] Following the engagement, a court of inquiry finds him negligent for allowing the Annika to get so close. He remains in the RMN, rising to flag rank and then leaves on half-pay. He commands an armed merchant, the Pirate’s Bane in Silesia. He continues working for Admiral Givens, passing on intelligence as he finds it. He warns Honor Harrington that the IAN is becoming more powerful and provocative in Silesia. On a hunch, he shadows RHN Hecate, concluding that the RHN is operating in Silesia. In an engagement against another RHN DD, he is wounded, losing his legs, but survives to report the RHN presence to Harrington. [WOH]

Description of Appearance:
Lieutenant Mercedes Brigham sat facing Blanding, as if she'd been placed deliberately to accentuate the contrast between them. Blanding was young and fair; Brigham was almost old enough to be Honor's mother, with dark, weathered-looking skin. She was Fearless's sailing master, a position that was being rapidly phased out of the service, but she seemed unconcerned by the fact. She'd never caught the attention to rise above lieutenant, yet her comfortable, lived-in face normally wore an air of quiet competence, though she had to know she would never advance beyond her present rank after so long in grade. And if she was as withdrawn as the others, at least she didn't seem physically afraid of her captain. [__?__]

"...Mercedes Brigham was a native of Gryphon. She was also a second-generation prolong recipient and old enough to be Honor's mother, which meant her black hair was stranded with white, and, despite over half a century in space, her dark skin still wore the weathered look of her birth world's climate. She'd never been beautiful, but her comfortable, lived-in face was attractive...." [FIE, Ch. 10]

Cachat, Victor.
PRH SS citizen lieutenant. He graduated third in his class at the SS academy, [SOTSf]; where he recorded the fourth highest pain threshold on record. [COS] Kevin Usher’s initial impression of him is that he is Durkheim’s wonder boy. Usher agrees to work with him on finding Helen Zilwicki after she is abducted. Although true to the PRH and SS, he is disgusted with Durkheim’s tactics and disapproves of him. During the rescue, he kills the entire unit of SS and Scrags who are supposedly there to assist him. [COWf] Oscar Saint-Just assigns him to investigate the murder of People’s Commissioner Jamka. After Admiral Theisman’s coup, he has himself placed under arrest pending the new government’s determination of his status. He is, initially, named governor of the La Martine Sector but he requests reassignment back to Haven. Virginia Usher, having met him in Chicago, adores him. [SOTSf] Kevin Usher sends him to Erewhon with Virginia to represent the Republic of Haven at Hieronymous Stein’s funeral. He and Virginia maintain the fiction that they are lovers. He has come to understand that he is the family she never had. They become involved in the attempt to kidnap Princess Ruth. He and Lieutenant Palane discover that they are very attracted to each other. Aboard the Felicia III, he cold-bloodedly shoots several Masadans just to prove he is serious about requiring information. Thanks to his efforts, the Erewhonese abrogate their treaty with the Alliance and ally with Haven. [COS]

Nitpick:
Victor Cachat shot the Masadans on board the Wages Of Sin, where he
was trying to get the codes for the Felicia III. {Huh? Why do I care?}

Description of Appearance:
"...but he's awfully young for something like this...." [COS, Ch. 7]

[FIE] He is among those captured on HMS Prince Adrian and Harrington disguises him as a Grayson marine lieutenant to ensure he is kept with them. During the breakout from PNS Tepes, he sacrifices himself to allow Harrington to escape. [IEH]

Description of Appearance:
"...Jamie Candless brought up the rear like an escorting destroyer..." [FIE, Ch. 19]

Caparelli, Sir Thomas.
RMN Admiral of the Green, First Space Lord, Manticoran Admiralty; succeeds Admiral Webster (Sir James Bowie). [SVW] He is a Knight Grand Cross of the Order of King Roger. As a young officer he was grievously wounded in Silesia and was treated by Dr. Alfred Harrington. Although not the intellectual or strategic equal of Admiral White Haven, he has a stolid personality and is more ideally suited to overall command of the RMN. [AOV] He is among the admirals put on half pay by the High Ridge government (and replaced by Chakrabarti, Sir Simon), allegedly because he “deserved a rest.” After the fall of the High Ridge government, he returns as First Space Lord. [WOH]

Description of Appearance:
"...The burly admiral in whom one could still see the bruising soccer player who'd led the Academy to three system championships..."
"...He wasn't the RMN's most brilliant flag officer. He knew his strengths— courage, integrity, and enough bullheaded stubbornness for any three people— but he also admitted his weaknesses. Officers like the Earl of White Haven or Lady Sonja Hemphill always made him uncomfortable, for he knew as well as they that they were his intellectual superiors. And White Haven, Caparelli admitted, had the infuriating gall to be not only a better strategist, but a better tactician, as well..." [HAE, Ch. 1]

As a lieutenant, the tactical officer in HMS Fearless (CA-286). [HOTQ] He is temporarily detached to the Office of Naval Intelligence’s Tech Team Four to work on a new weapon that seems to be a super grav lance. To save Fearless, against orders, he brings up the wedge on their ship, an action that succeeds as a tactical ploy. [SOTSw] As a lieutenant commander, the tactical officer in HMS Nike. [FOD] As a commander, executive officer in HMAMC Wayfarer. [HAE] He is promoted to captain (j.g.). He marches at the head of the horses pulling the caisson in Honor Harrington’s funeral procession. [EOH] He commands a CLAC during Operation Buttercup. [AOV] As captain (senior grade), he commands HMS Werewolf as Admiral Honor Harrington’s flag captain. [WOH]

Description of Appearance:
"...a tall, dark-haired commander walked through it. He was built on long and lean lines, with a hawk-like nose and a ready smile. The breast of his tunic bore the white-barred blue ribbon of the Order of Gallantry and the red and white ribbon of the Saganami Cross, and, like Honor herself, the blood-red stripe of the Monarch's Thanks marked his right sleeve. He looked decidedly on the young side, even for a prolong recipient, to have acquired two of the Star Kingdom's four top medals for valor, and even as Honor rose in pure delight, her mind's eye could still see the awkward puppy of a junior-grade lieutenant she'd taken to Basilisk Station with her just eight years before....
...For all his youth, Rafael Cardones was one of the best tactical officers she'd ever seen, and he'd clearly gone right on maturing in the time she'd spent in Yeltsin...." [HAE, Ch. 6]

[EOH] He firmly believes in the necessity of destroying particularly vicious pirates even though they might prey on Manticoran shipping. He orders the Vaubon to assist what he believes is a freighter. When it turns out to be RMAMC Wayfarer, he is forced to surrender. Although a technically a POW, Honor Harrington treats him as an honored guest. [HAE] Because he was captured because he followed orders he could not be shot. He is assigned as Citizen Admiral Theisman’s operations officer at Barnett, something Theisman interprets as another indication that he is expendable. He is ordered aboard PNS Tepes to be PN liaison with the RMN prisoners and is visiting them when Horace Harkness leads the breakout. He is forced to accompany them and is among the group that escapes to Hades. [IEH] He realizes that because of the circumstances, he can never return to the PRH. This is reinforced after listening to Admiral Parnell (Amos Daughtry). Although Harrington wanted to give him command of one of the captured ships but felt too many ex-prisoners would not want to serve under a former PN officer. She makes him executive officer in ENS (ex-PNS) Farnese. [EOH] He retains his PN uniform until he reaches Manticore. His defection hurts Theisman but he understands it. He is among those captured on HMS Prince Adrian. During the escape from PNS Tepes, he acquits himself extremely well, killing an SS sergeant. He is among those who survive and land on Hades. [IEH] The experience gets him over his shyness and clumsiness and Harrington likes the changes in him. He is the first person to discover celery on Styx. [EOH]

Description of Appearance:
"...a husky young man.... ...cursed with the fair, freckled complexion that went with his dark red hair and green eyes. He was enormously tall for a Grayson—at a hundred and ninety centimeters, he was taller than Honor herself, which was a claim very few Graysons could make—but he was also only twenty-one T-years old. He never seemed entirely certain what to do with his hands and feet, and he was agonizingly aware of Honor's reputation and rank . . . which only made his lingering, puppylike awkwardness worse. In many ways, he reminded her of young Aubrey Wanderman, a
grav tech from her last ship... ...the physical antithesis of Jared Sutton, her last flag lieutenant, his lingering shyness and determination to get things right—eventually—reminded her almost too strongly of Jared." [IEH, Ch. 7]
"...The ensign's broad shoulders..." [IEH, Ch. 9]
"...Clinkscales' fair redhead's complexion had not reacted well to Hell's climate.... ...he hadn't burned—yet—but he tended to stay an alarming, heat-induced beet-red which looked fairly awesome on someone his size. He is violently allergic to squash from Manticore. [FOD] He began his career as a Sword armsman recruit and rose to the rank of brigadier in palace security by age thirty-six. He served as chief of Planetary Security under Benjamin Mayhew IX and his father. Among the ways in which he views Harrington is as a daughter. [IEH] He vehemently argues against being made her heir and suggests to Benjamin that her parents be approached about having another child. According to the terms of Harrington’s will, he is to continue as CEO of Grayson Sky Domes, Ltd. [EOH] Before Harrington’s return, he was named Regent for Faith Harrington, Honor’s heir to the Steading of Harrington. [AOV]

Description of Appearance:
"...Ensign Clinkscales stepped up beside her as she spoke his name, and the Regent smiled as he enfolded his towering nephew in a huge hug. Howard Clinkscales had been a powerfully built man in his prime, for a Grayson, but he'd never matched Carson's centimeters, and he was eighty-seven pre-prolong T-years old. [COWm] He is a childless bachelor. He is appointed to head the diplomatic mission to conclude a treaty with Grayson and is killed when GSNS Austin Grayson is destroyed during the Masadans initial attack on Grayson. [HOTQ] According to Admiral White Haven, he considered Harrington the daughter he never had. [FOD] Among the things he was fond of saying was, “Almost invariably, ‘surprise’ is what happens when one side fails to recognize something it’s seen all along.” When Admiral White Haven was a fourth term midshipman, Courvoisier was his senior tactical officer. [EOH] Captain Bachfisch considers him the finest tactician and one of the three best strategists with whom he has ever served. [COWm] He came to Lieutenant commander Harrington’s assistance after she broke up a slave depot on Casimir. To save her career he twisted several arms of members of the Conservative Association. Elizabeth I,
Queen. Queen of the Star Kingdom of Manticore, the daughter of King Roger I (Roger Winton). [MTHu] To the surprise of the nobility, she proved to be a strong ruler. Much of the power of the Crown is attributable to her. [AOV] At the age of 53 she became President of the Board of Directors of the colony and one of its pre-eminent jurists. She established that the Prime Minister and all non-hereditary members of the Royal Council served at the pleasure of the Monarchy. This established the supremacy of the Monarchy even though it was not written into the Constitution. [MTHu]

Elizabeth III,
Queen. Queen of the Star Kingdom of Manticore for forty years at the time of the First Battle of Hancock. Her full name is Elizabeth Angelique Samantha Annette Winton (or: Elizabeth Adrienne Samantha Annette Winton [AOV, Ch. 6]). On a visit to Sphinx she was adopted by a treecat she named Ariel. [FOD] She is the daughter of King Roger III and Queen Adrienne. [EOH] Because she was born in the same years as Basilisk was annexed, she is the Duchess of Basilisk. She met Justin Zyrr when she was sixteen and was touring his research lab. He yelled at her for entering a restricted area. They then sent letters of apology that crossed in the mail. She contacted him and they began dating. When she learned that her father had been assassinated, she wanted to take personal action against the conspirators. She was convinced that it was in her and the Star Kingdom’s best interest to handle it quietly. [WOHq] They subsequently married and have two children, Crown Prince Roger and Princess Joanna. It is said that she holds grudges until they die of old age and then she takes them to a taxidermist to have them stuffed. [AOV] Her name among the People is Soul of Steel. [COWc] When Baron High Ridge asks to form a government of national unity as a result of Operation Bolthole, she becomes the first Monarch to refuse such a request. [WOH]

Description of Appearance:
"...a smile so wide it might almost be called a grin. Against Elizabeth's mahogany skin, the white teeth gleamed brightly...." [CoS, Ch. 1]
"..."Her hair's not really right, for starters. Very wavy, true, but not much like the tightly kinked hair found in ancient times among most of the tropical ethnic variants. Then, her facial features—especially the nose—are much closer to those which our ancestors would have labeled by the term 'Caucasian' than the term 'Negroid.' And while her skin color is indeed quite lustrous, it's really not the tone you would have found among Africans of the day. It's too light, for one thing, and for another, that definite mahogany tinge is really closer to that of a dark-skinned 'Amerindian'—that was a term used for North American indigenes—than an African...." Fitzclarence, William Allen Hillman, Lord Burdette.
Steadholder of Burdette Steading, an extreme conservative opposed to Protector Benjamin’s reforms and an enemy of Honor Harrington. After Brother Marchant is banned by the Sacristy, he refuses to allow the new minister to take his place and restores Marchant. He conspires with Steadholder Mueller to sabotage the Grayson Sky Domes, Ltd. project in Mueller Steading to discredit Harrington. (Unlike Mueller and Marchant, he is horrified by the death of the children.) When it becomes obvious that sabotage can be proved, he attempts to assassinate Harrington by having her pinnace shot down. When Benjamin names him as the responsible party in the Conclave of Steadholders, he chooses to challenge the Protector’s champion. As a Swordmaster Second, he assumes he can kill Harrington. She quickly slashes him open and beheads him. [FIE]

Description of Appearance:
"...Burdette had the Fitzclarence look—tall for a Grayson, broad-shouldered and square, and he'd succeeded to his dignities at an early age. His strong-jawed, handsome face and hard, ice-blue eyes bore the confident stamp of a man accustomed to command . . . and of one unaccustomed to being thwarted...." [FIE, Ch. 12]

Fontein, Erasmus.
PRH citizen general, the people’s commissioner assigned to Citizen Vice Admiral McQueen. [AOV] He was a major in Internal Security under the Legislaturists. He assisted in the planning of the Harris assassination and was subsequently promoted to State Sec citizen brigadier. [FIE] He hides behind the mask of being an incompetent. He is taken by surprise by McQueen having prepared contingency plans to deal with a threat such as the one posed by the Levelers. [IEH] He is slightly injured in the crash of her pinnace during the Leveler coup, suffering a broken and dislocated pinkie. [MTHw] Oscar Saint-Just considers him the most thoughtful people’s commissioner other than Eloise Pritchart. [COWn] Saint-Just orders him to begin building a “paper-trail” to use against her when the time comes. He is killed during her attempted coup. [AOV]

Description of Appearance:
"...Fontein smiled at her with his habitual air of slight befuddlement over all things naval, and the satisfaction it woke in her eyes irritated him. He no more enjoyed being thought a fool—especially by someone who hid it so poorly—than the next man. On the other hand, he'd worked hard to convince McQueen he was only one more ignorant Prole who'd risen to his level of incompetence, and he had no intention of revealing how well he actually understood her command's routine operations . . . or how much more thoroughly than she he understood her mission and its implications.

State Security had selected Erasmus Fontein carefully for McQueen's commissioner, though Citizen Secretary Saint-Just had disliked letting him go. Fontein was a wizened little man who looked like someone's harmless uncle, but appearances were deceiving...." [FIE, Ch. 15]

"...Fontein was one of the best StateSec had, yet he looked like a complete incompetent. ...Fontein had taken pains to convince her he was almost as inept as he looked. ...His report had been scathingly self-honest, fully admitting that he'd been taken totally by surprise. ...but Fontein was a professional. He'd made certain his superiors recognized the implications...." [IEH, Ch. 6]

Foraker, Shannon.
PN officer. As a citizen lieutenant, tactical officer in PNS Vaubon. She is a technical whiz to the point of being a techno-nerd. (i.e.: Warner Caslet thinks of her as a "Witch".) When excited or distracted, she often reverts to referring to a superior as “sir,” contrary to PRH directives. [FIE] She is promoted to lieutenant commander and remains in the same position. She is among the crew captured by HMAMC Wayfarer. [HAE] Promoted to citizen commander, she is tactical officer in PNS Count Tilly. She spends a great deal of time with the prisoners captured from HMS Prince Adrian. She probably saves Nimitz’s life by telling Cordelia Ransom that if he is killed, Honor Harrington will die as a result. Her display on the Count Tilly reveals that two small ships escape from PNS Tepes before she is destroyed. She is about to erase the tape when Rear Admiral Tourville (Lester) does it instead. [IEH] As a result of her experience with the prisoners from HMS Prince Adrian, she changes. She becomes very careful of what she says and seems to watch everything around her. [EOH] Because of the kindness she showed to Harrington and Nimitz, no one mentions her to the Manticoran press so as not to compromise her. As part of the many ops programs she downloaded to Twelfth Fleet ships were self-destruct programs into the computer systems of the SSN ships that are assigned to Twelfth Fleet. When they are ordered to act against the PN ships, she activates it and vaporizes them. Her comment is, “Oops.” [AOV] Promoted to vice admiral in the RHN, she commands Bolthole and supervises its research and development programs. [WOH]

He was clearly curious, but his intensity was a deeper thing, not a reflection of anxiety. Perhaps it would be more accurate to call it focus, Truman mused. He was also deeply and darkly tanned—thanks, no doubt, to the rehab camp to which Bassingford Medical Center's physical therapists had sent him to complete his recovery. She'd watched him carefully when he walked into the office, and there was no limp at all to indicate the left leg he'd lost when Peep fire put the superdreadnought Ravensport permanently out of the war at First Nightingale...." [HAE] Although he was thought to be a better choice than Esther McQueen for Secretary of War, it was impossible to appoint him because he had been recalled from Silesia because of his “failure.” [IEH] He commands Twelfth Fleet for Operation Icarus and his flagship is PNS Salamis. He is as disgusted by Honor Harrington’s treatment as a prisoner of war. [EOH] He is ordered to return to Haven, most likely to be arrested. The SSN ships accompanying Twelfth Fleet are then destroyed by Shannon Foraker shortly before Citizen Admiral Theisman’s coup. "...Gryphon had the smallest population of any of the Manticore System's inhabited planets (which, inhabitants of Sphinx and Manticore declared, was because only lunatics would live on a world with Gryphon's climate)..." [HAE, Ch. 7]

The accent can be described as: ______________________________.

"Technically, Manticore-B V, one of the settled worlds of the Star Kingdom of Manticore. It is somewhat like Old Earth. [OBS] The day is __.__ standard hours long, the year is ___.__ local days long, ___.__ T-days or _.__ T-years long. Its diameter is __,___ kilometers and has an axial tilt of ____ degrees."

...the giant had a distinct Gryphon accent, and his voice was even deeper than the senior chief's. It was also soft, almost gentle, as if its owner seldom needed to raise it..." [HAE, Ch. 23]

Harkness, Sir Horace.
RMN NCO. As a petty officer in HMS Fearless (CL-56), he has been busted a number of times because of his penchant for picking fights with anyone in a Marine uniform. He also has a genius for somewhat questionable activities. As a result, he and Ensign Tremaine become very good at finding contraband coming through the Basilisk Wormhole Junction. [OBS] Lieutenant Tremaine introduces Carolyn Wolcott to him to help her approach Commander Venizelos regarding a Grayson officer insulting and taking improprieties with her. [HOTQ] After the First Battle of Hancock, he is promoted to senior chief and is assigned to HMS Prince Adrian. [FOD] He is next assigned to HMAMC Wayfarer in Flight Ops. Prior to the assignment, he marries Iris Babcock, (Iris), much to Honor Harrington’s shock. As a result, he is accepted by the Marines as “one of their own.” He helps Aubrey Wanderman learn to defend himself and to Wanderman’s amazement, he learns that the reason Harkness fought with Marines is because he likes to fight. [HAE] He is assigned to GSNS Jason Alvarez. He pilots the pinnace that brings Honor Harrington and her staff to HMS Prince Adrian and is there when the ship surrenders. He appears to desert and join the PN. In actuality, he uses a minicomp to reprogram the computers in PNS Tepes and leads the escape of the RMN and GSN prisoners. He has assured that he is assigned to the same ship where Scotty Tremaine is assigned by hacking into the RMN BuPers computer system. [IEH] He receives the Parliamentary Medal of Valor and is knighted. He is promoted to chief warrant officer and assigned to the LAC wing of HMS Hydra. He is also a recipient of the CGM and DSO. [AOV] In HMS Werewolf, he is senior LAC flight engineer even though the position actually calls for a lieutenant commander. [WOH]

Description of Appearance:
"...a fatherly voice could come out of those battered, prize-fighter features..." [OBS] "...A burly, battered looking man... ...with the prizefighter's face..." [HAE, Ch. 7]
"...He was a big man—not as big as Steilman, but five centimeters taller than Aubrey—and he looked tough. ..." [HAE, Ch. 22]

[IEH] At the suggestion of Protector Benjamin, he and Allison have another baby after Honor is “executed.” They have twins, Faith and James. He oversees the surgery on Honor after she returns from Hades. [AOV] He is extremely gentle and compassionate. He refuses to discuss the very few occasions when he has lost his temper and Honor is aware that she gets her temper from him. [WOH]

Description of Appearance:
"...Alfred Harrington towered over his tiny wife. He was a good four centimeters taller than his daughter had been, and he had the solid muscle and bone of someone born and bred to a gravity ten percent heavier than Beowulf's. Yet despite his impressive physical presence..." [EOH, Ch. 5]

Nominated:

Harrington, Allison Chou.
Dr. Honor Harrington’s mother, a neurosurgeon. She is a native of Beowulf and has always delighted in scandalizing Manticoran and Sphinxian society with somewhat sexually provocative behavior. [HOTQ] She has an older brother named Jacques Chou who lives on Beowulf. [HAE] She met her husband while they were students at Semmelweiss University. At Honor’s request, she becomes director of the Doctor Jennifer Chou Genetic Clinic. [IEH] At the suggestion of Protector Benjamin, she and Alfred have another baby after Honor is “executed.” They have twins, Faith and James. [AOV]

Description of Appearance:
"...She was a tiny thing, little more than two-thirds Honor’s own height and of almost pure Old Earth Oriental extraction. The strong, sharply carved bone structure which had always made Honor feel plain and unfinished was muted into exotic beauty in her mother’s face, and the prolong process had frozen her biological age at no more than thirty T-years. She really was like a treecat herself, Honor thought—delicate but strong, graceful and fascinating, with just a hint of the predator..."
"...Courvosier wasn’t much taller than her mother..." [HOTQ]
"...
He'd known she was shorter than her daughter, but he'd been unprepared for a person this tiny. Why, she was actually shorter than the majority of Grayson women,...
...She looked up at her greeters, and almond eyes uncannily like her daughter's sparkled with impish delight...
...A single glance would have been enough to identify her as the Steadholder's mother. It was the eyes, especially, he thought, those huge, dark, almond eyes, yet there was more to it. Dr. Harrington's face had a delicate loveliness, a perfection of feature and proportion which was just sufficiently imperfect to prove it was natural, not the product of biosculpt. Lady Harrington shared the same features on an almost point-by-point basis, but what was delicate in Doctor Harrington was too bold, too strongly carved, for classical beauty in Lady Harrington. It was as if someone had taken all the undeniable strength in her mother's features and distilled it down, planing away the delicacy—the "softness"—to bare the falcon hiding beneath, yet the kinship was there for anyone to see.
But there were differences, as well. ...despite her long dark hair, untouched by a single streak of white, and youthful, unlined complexion, and he suspected that this was one mental adjustment he was going to find it difficult to make. At least she did look older than her daughter, but the prolong process had originated on Beowulf, and Allison Harrington was one of the very first second-generation recipients. That meant she looked several years younger than Miranda, and the roguish sparkle in her eyes made Clinkscales acutely nervous...." [IEH, Ch. 11]

Harrington, Lady Dame Honor Stephanie, Steadholder Harrington and Duchess Harrington.

[Note. The definitive biography of her is found in The Universe of Honor Harrington, the final story in More Than Honor.]
A native of Sphinx, [OBS]; the only child of Dr. Alfred and Dr. Allison Harrington. [HOTQ]. She was adopted by a treecat whom she named Nimitz. [OBS] She is a member of the Third Stellar Missionary Communion (Reformed). [FIE] She is a genie and needs to eat a lot because of her matabolism. [IEH]
Midshipwoman. She was sexually assaulted by Lord Pavel Young who she then severely beat. Although she refused to press charges or reveal the details, he was forced to apologize to her. She excelled at piloting and tactics but almost flunked out because of mathematics. She set an Academy sailplane record for combined altitude, aerobatics and duration. She graduated in the top ten percent overall although she was only two hundred thirty-seventh out of two hundred forty-one in math. [OBS] Michelle Henke describes her as a dunce at mathematics although possessed of an intuitive ability in astrogation. [WOHq] At some point she dated Cal Panokulous. She found out why Nimitz disliked him when she walked in on him with another woman. [SVW] While engaging in aerial combat, she accidentally cost Commandant Hartley victory in a regatta. [FOD] Her midshipwoman cruise was in HMS War Maiden in Silesia. On the cruise, she was subjected to Lieutenant Elvis Santino until he was relieved of being OCTO. He took a particular dislike to her and Nimitz, probably a result of his familiarity with Pavel Young. She proves herself capable of handling enlisted personnel and impresses the senior staff. After Santino is sent away with RMMS Sylvan Grove, she replaces him as Assistant Tactical Officer (ATO). Almost single-handedly, she not only prevents the War Maiden’s destruction, but also destroys PSN Annika. For her efforts, Captain Bachfisch confirms her as ATO with the temporary rank of lieutenant (j.g.) and permanent rank of ensign. [COWm] Bachfisch refused to allow her to testify at his Court of Inquiry to spare her any chance of damaging her career by defending him. [WOH]
Ensign to Fearless (CL-56). She spent eleven months as sailing master of HMS Osprey then as captain of LAC 113, an intra-system craft. [SVW] She was a tactical officer in HMS Basilisk. [SOTSw] After taking the commanding officer’s course, as a lieutenant commander she received command of HMS Hawkwing. While captain, the ship received the fleet “E” for tactics. At some point while in HMS Manticore, she earned the CGM and Monarch’s Thanks for saving lives when the ship’s forward power room exploded. [OBS] As executive officer in HMS Broadsword. She leads the rescue effort during the Attica Avalanche on Gryphon, [WOHh]; in 275 AL and was mentioned in dispatches. [SVW] As a lieutenant commander, she broke up a slavery base on Casimir, an act for which she was highly praised by Lady Catherine Montaigne. The action almost derailed her career but Raoul Courvoisier used his influence to twist the arms of some members of the Conservative Association to save her. [COWf]
Fearless (CL-56). As a commander, commanding HMS Fearless (CL-56), she receives the unenviable task of proving the grav lance. Thanks to an initial surprise success, she and the ship are “exiled” to Basilisk Station where they foil the PN’s Operation Daedalus and destroy RHMS Sirius. For her efforts, she is promoted two grades to Captain, Senior Grade and receives the Manticore Cross. [OBS] She is tried in the PRH and convicted, in absentia, for the destruction of RHMS Sirius at Basilisk. Although the action is to cover the PRH’s false claim that the Sirius is a purely civilian ship, the action is to have repercussions years later. [IEH]
Fearless (CA-268). She assists ONI in Silesia in trying to analyze what appears to be a super grav-lace. Her use of impellers to signal IANS Neue Bayern provides Hemphill with the idea that results in the RMN’s FTL communications system. [SOTSw] [SOTSw] She commands a small squadron sent to Grayson in support of Admiral Courvoisier’s diplomatic mission. When he is killed, she becomes senior officer. She ignores the Honorable Reginald Houseman’s order to evacuate and backhands him across the face for cowardice. At dinner with Protector Benjamin IX, Nimitz and she foil an assassination attempt but she is shot in the face and loses her left eye. She is given a letter of reprimand for striking Housesman but for successfully defending Grayson, particularly for preventing the Thunder of God from attacking, she is knighted by Queen Elizabeth III, awarded the Star of Grayson and created a Steadholder, the first woman in Grayson history to be one. In accepting the Steading, the Star Kingdom recognizes her as a Countess. [HOTQ]
Nike. After recovering for almost a T-year, she receives command of HMS Nike and becomes Rear Admiral Sarnow’s flag captain. While at Hancock Station, she meets Paul Tankersley again and the two of them begin a passionate romance. When Sarnow is severely wounded in action, she takes command of Task Group Hancock 001 and attempts to keep the group together until Admiral Danislav arrives. After the battle, she is ordered to return Nike to Manticore for repairs. [SVW] To honor her, Queen Elizabeth III raises her to Colonel of Marines. She is vilified as the true villain in Captain Lord Pavel Young’s court martial. After Young becomes the Earl of North Hollow, Admiral White Haven suggests that she go to Grayson for a while. She is seated in the Conclave of Steadholders and, because she holds the Star of Grayson, is also the Protector’s Champion. While on Grayson she learns of Tankersley’s death and she returns to Manticore, deeply in shock. She goads the Honorable Denver Summervale into challenging her to a duel and kills him. She determines to kill North Hollow despite Admiral White Haven’s order not to do so. The only way she can reach him is to be seated in the House of Lords, a ploy to challenge him. He treacherously shoots her while her back is turned and she and the Master of the Field kill him. She is relieved of command of Nike, placed on half pay and returns to Grayson to live. [FOD]
Steadholder and GSN admiral. High Admiral Matthews prevails on her to accept a GSN commission as admiral and she commands Battle Squadron 1. Opposition to her as steadholder and a foreign “harlot” grows, led by Lord Burdette. A Sky Dome being built in Mueller Steading collapses, killing many children. She blames herself and even Nimitz is unable to “disagree” with her. When she learns that it was, sabotage and not an accident, she returns to Grayson to attend the Protector’s call for a meeting of the Conclave of Steadholders. She survives an assassination attempt when her pinnace is shot down although she is injured. When he names Lord Burdette as the guilty party, Burdette chooses trial by combat against the Protector’s Champion and she promptly kills him. She then commands the forces covering Yeltsin, defeating the PN’s Operation Dagger in the Fourth Battle of Yeltsin. She receives the Crossed Swords to append to her Star of Grayson. [FIE]
Wayfarer. She is recalled to RMN service and given a squadron of four Q-ships to patrol the Silesian Confederacy designated Task Group 1037. Before Protector Benjamin agrees to release her from Grayson service, he insists that the RMN recognize that while Captain Honor Harrington is subject to the RMN and its rules, Steadholder Honor Harrington was a sovereign ruler. The Manticoran press nicknames her “the Salamander” for her habit of being wherever the fire is hottest. She commands from HMAMC Wayfarer. She meets Admiral von Rabenstrange and lays the groundwork for RMN-IAN cooperation. Among her captures is PNS Vaubon and she takes Warner Caslet prisoner. When she comes to the aid of RMMS Artemis, she is, again, brought into conflict with Klaus Hauptman. She lures PNS Achmed away from Artemis and they destroy each other in the engagement, with the Wayfarer coming away slightly better. After they are rescued by Artemis, Hauptman apologizes to her. [HAE]
Commodore. She serves on the Weapons Development Board after returning from Silesia. Promoted to commodore, she is given command of Cruiser Squadron 18 in the newly forming Eighth Fleet. During a dinner party, through her link with Nimitz, she realizes that Admiral White Haven is attracted to her. Afraid of what this may mean, she volunteers to protect a convoy to get away from him. On the trip, she visits HMS Prince Adrian to celebrate Alistair McKeon’s birthday. Unaware that the PN has retaken the Adler System, they are confronted by a PN task group. After ensuring the survival of the convoy, she orders the battered Prince Adrian to surrender. At Barnett, Cordelia Ransom orders that she be taken to Hades to be executed as a convicted murderer for the destruction of RHMS Sirius at Basilisk. She then launches Nimitz in an unsuccessful attempt to kill Ransom. Her prosthetic eye and nerves are burned out on Ransom’s orders. Shortly after arrival at Hades, Horace Harkness leads a breakout of the RMN prisoners and she is rescued. Refusing to leave Andrew LaFollet behind, she is seriously wounded, losing her left arm but escaping with the others to Hades. [IEH]
Hades. She coordinates the effort to contact other prisoners, first making contact with those in Camp Inferno. Using Nimitz to “sample” the emotions of the others, they gain control of the camp. They then attack and take control of Styx. By luring several SSN ships into range of the orbital forts, they gain control over them. Next, they take control of a task group composed of SS and PN units. Finally, when it becomes obvious that not all is right and an attacking force is sent, she coordinates the plan that results in the almost complete destruction of the force in what becomes known as the Battle of Cerberus. She then leads them with several hundred thousand prisoners to Trevor’s Star and return to Allied space. [EOH] In arguing for her to return to the Star Kingdom of Manticore, Anton Zilwicki tells Lady Catherine Montaigne that Harrington’s return from the grave alters the Manticoran political equation. [COWf]
Return. Inadvertently, she created a Grayson Constitutional crisis by organizing the Elysian Space Navy having used her Grayson rank. Protector Benjamin averts it by creating the Protector’s Own Squadron composed of ESN ships and personnel interested in joining with Harrington, as honorary commander. On return to Manticore, she is created Duchess Harrington and given a duchy from the Westmount Crown Reserve. She is jumped in rank to full admiral in the RMN. While she is treated for her facial injuries and adjusts to her new prosthetic arm and eye, she commands the ATC and teaches Introductory Tactics at the Academy. Thanks to her personal knowledge of Elvis Santino, she singlehandedly resurrects Commander Jaruwalski’s career. She purchases a new yacht, the Jamie Candless. During Queen Elizabeth III’s visit to Grayson, she prevents the assassination of the Queen and Protector but is unable to prevent HMS Queen Adrienne’s destruction. Elizabeth makes her a member of her personal advisors. [AOV]
Sidemore Station. In an attempt to neutralize and discredit her and Earl White Haven, the High Ridge government begins a rumor campaign that they are having an affair. When Lady Emily Alexander publicly acknowledges her as a friend, the campaign loses strength. She is then assigned to take an under-strength unit, Task Force Thirty-Four, to take command of Sidemore Station. Protector Benjamin sends the Protector’s Own on a secret, extended deployment to supplement her command. She meets quietly with Admiral von Rabenstrange to defuse the potential explosive situation between the RMN and IAN. Her command is the only one in the RMN to inflict a significant reverse on the RHN’s Operation Thunderbolt. She returns to Manticore after the fall of the High Ridge government. Lady Emily had spent much time talking with Samantha and she gives her blessing to Harrington and White Haven acting on their love for each other. [WOH]
Wounds and injuries. Defending Protector Benjamin, she is shot at point blank range in the right cheek, breaking the zygomatic arch. She broke her nose when she fell. She suffers total mortality to the nerves on that side of her face although her aural nerve is untouched. The cornea is lacerated by glass and debris and the eye has to be removed. [HOTQ] Because she does not respond to regen treatments, she has to be given artificial nerves. The prosthetic eye has a zoom function. It takes almost a T-year to recover sufficiently to be certified for duty. [SVW] She is badly battered and suffers a broken rib in the crash of her pinnace when it is shot down. She also suffers a scalp wound. Three more ribs are broken when her vest stops the bullets that had killed Reverend Hanks. [FIE] Her prosthetic eye and artificial nerves are burned out to deactivate them after she is captured by the PN. During the escape, she suffers a flechette wound to the leg. Rather than leave Andrew LaFollet behind, she rescues him. While escaping, her left arm is so severely wounded that Dr. Montoya can only amputate it. [IEH] The prosthetic arm has a pulser with a thirty round magazine built into it. [WOH]
Nimitz. She was adopted by him when she was sixteen. [IEH] At the time of her first visit to Grayson, she is becoming aware that she can sense other people’s emotions through him. His reaction to the assassins from the Brotherhood of Maccabeus warned her, prompting her to act in time. [HOTQ] She is aware that he does something for her when she is angry but she cannot define what it is. [SVW] She guesses that Tankersley, MacGuinness and Michelle Henke have figured out that the bond she shares with Nimitz is much deeper than other bond pairs share. [FOD] Once again, his quick reactions may have prevented her being shot when he takes down one of the assassins who shot down her pinnace. [FIE] She has visited Nimitz’s clan in their home. She is able to receive images from him. [HAE] Although Samantha had not adopted her, as her guardian and Nimitz’s mate, she is given an assignment that does not endanger her or the ‘cats while Samantha is pregnant. At the moment she launches him in an attempt to kill Cordelia Ransom, their link suddenly deepens. She is able to maintain the link with him even though they are a great distance away from each other. The sure knowledge that he is still alive helps keep her going. [IEH] They are the first pair to achieve two-way communication. At her mother’s suggestion, she retains a linguist who creates a sign language by which the treecats can communicate with each other and with humans. [AOV]
Miscellaneous. In addition to her other awards, she is a recipient of the Distinguished Service Order. [SVW] Thomas Theisman cannot believe the RMN is so stupid that they would beach her. [FIE] Thanks to Grayson Sky Domes, Ltd., she is probably the richest person on Grayson. [HAE] She received the Sidemore Presidential Medal for freeing the system from Andrew Warnecke. [IEH] Esther McQueen characterizes her as possibly the best RMN commander. She purchases a yacht to use on Grayson and names her the Jamie Candless. [AOV] Her name among the People is Dances on Clouds. [COWc] The PRH considers her their greatest nemesis but she is also their favorite example of the injustices of elitist rule. [COWf] She is the only RMN officer authorized to wear the Grayson insignia for the Protector’s Own Squadron on her uniform. [WOH]

" Honor's short-cropped mass of feathery, dark brown hair." [OBS]
"...normally severe 'professional expression',... ...she was almost twenty-four years old—over forty Terran standard years..." [OBS]
"The face ...was still all sharply defined planes and angles dominated by a straight, patrician nose... and devoid of the least trace of cosmetics. Honor had been told (once) that her face had 'a severe elegance.' " [OBS]
"Her hair-style was practical, with no pretensions to glamour. It was clipped short to accommodate vac helmets and bouts of zero-gee, and if its two-centimeter strands had a stubborn tendency to curl, it was neither blond, nor red, nor even black, just a highly practical, completely unspectacular dark brown. Her eyes were even darker, and she'd always thought their hint of an almond shape, inherited from her mother, made them look out of place in her strong-boned face, almost as if they'd been added as an afterthought. Their darkness made her pale complexion seem still paler, and her chin was too strong below her firm-lipped mouth." [OBS]
"Her triangular face had looked stern and forbidding, almost cold, in the file imagery, especially framed in the dark fuzz of her close-cropped hair, but the pictures had lied. They hadn't captured the life and vitality, the sharp-edged attractiveness." [OBS]
"Her voice was a cool, clear soprano, surprisingly light in a woman her size, for she easily topped McKeon's own hundred and eighty centimeters." [OBS]
"...hair was clipped shorter than most men's..." [OBS]

She is a precocious girl who figures out how to obtain images of whatever has been stealing celery. Climbs Quickly, a treecat of the Bright Water Clan, becomes fascinated with her and her mind-glow. He comes to her assistance when she breaks a leg in a hang-gliding crash and protects her from a Sphinx Hexapuma. When he is grievously wounded, she defends him and kills the Hexapuma with a vibro-knife. During the incident, they bonded and when her father comes to rescue her, she takes Climbs Quickly with them to be treated. [MTHb] Treecats referred to her as Death Fang’s Bane and she named Climbs Quickly Lionheart. She rose to the rank of brigadier in the Sphinx Forestry Service and was awarded the Order of Merit although she declined the Order of the Star Kingdom. "...Prolong always made it difficult to judge someone's age, but the man had a few streaks of gray in his hair and unkempt beard. His face was haggard, with huge, dark circles under the eyes, and an ugly, recent scar disfigured his right cheek. In fact, Caslet realized, it stretched clear up around the side of his head and his entire right ear was missing.
The woman was probably younger, but it was hard to tell. Once, she must have been quite attractive, and it showed even past her dirty skin and oily hair, but she was even more haggard than her companion, and her eyes were those of a cornered animal. They darted everywhere, watching every shadow, and Caslet fought a sudden desire to step back from her. She radiated a dangerous, half-mad aura of pure murder, and her mouth was a frozen snarl.
"Citizen Commander Caslet," Branscombe said quietly, "allow me to introduce Captain Harold Sukowski and Commander Christina Hurlman."..." [HAE, Ch.. 19]
